(Pasadena, MD) – A forensic examination at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner today determined the remains found yesterday in an Anne Arundel County river were animal remains and not human.
Forensic experts at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore today examined the two feet and the portion of an extremity with a joint similar to a wrist that were found yesterday in Cockey Creek near Pasadena. The conclusion was that the remains were animal and were probably from a bear.
Maryland State Police homicide detectives have experienced similar finds on the Eastern Shore and in Western Maryland involving bear remains that have been disposed of. When a bear carcass is prepared, especially for taxidermy purposes, the feet are skinned and cut off. The claws are removed from the foot. The remaining skinned foot can resemble a large human foot with five toes. Unfortunately, these remains are sometimes discarded inappropriately in areas where they will be found by others. It is currently bear hunting season in parts of Canada.
The investigation is closed.
