HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY RIVER

(Pasadena, MD) – State and county police are continuing to investigate an apparent homicide after human body parts were found today in an Anne Arundel County river.                       An identity of the victim is not known at this time.  The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for forensic testing.                     At about 7:15 a.m. today, officers from the Anne Arundel County Police responded to the 400-block of Riverside Drive in Pasadena, after a homeowner called and reported finding possible human remains on the beach in front of his home.  Officers found a severed human foot that had apparently washed up on the beach from Cockey Creek.  Homes along the east side of Riverside Drive adjoin Cockey Creek, a large waterway that runs into the Magothy River.                       County officers contacted Natural Resources Police officers and a search of the area ensued.  At about 10:00 a.m. today, a homeowner five houses north of the original caller contacted police in the area and directed them to the water in front of his home.  Officers recovered a second foot floating in the water along the beach.                       Natural Resources Police contacted Maryland State Police, who responded and continued the investigation.  A large-scale search of the waterway and the beaches on both sides was initiated.  The search included a boat with side scanning sonar from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, a Natural Resources Police boat, an aerial search by the Anne Arundel County Police helicopter, ground searches by troopers, county officers, firemen, and Natural Resources Police officers.  Cadaver dogs from Mid-Atlantic Search and Rescue and Search Dogs of Maryland also responded and searched the area along the river and on the water from Natural Resources Police boats.                     Shortly before 12:30 p.m. today, a Natural Resources Police officer found what appear to be human remains floating in the water of Cockey Creek near the 300-block of Kramer Road, north of the area where the feet were found.  Investigators believe the remains may be a portion of a human arm that possibly includes the wrist.                       Maryland State Police crime scene technicians responded and processed the areas where the remains were found for any potential evidence.  Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators are on the scene and will lead the continuing investigation.                                            Investigators believe the feet are those of an adult, but are unable to positively verify the race or sex of the victim.  The amount of time the body parts had been in the water is also unknown at this time.  Investigators will not speculate at this time on how the parts may have been severed from the body.                       Anyone with information that may pertain to this continuing investigation is urged to contact the Maryland State Police at the Glen Burnie Barracks, at 410-761-5130.  Calls may be kept confidential.
